And Ecuador
A glorious Indian kingdom existed in Ecuador even before the Incas were conquered in 1470. In 1533, the Spanish conquered Ecuador.
In 1822 a great revolt broke out led by the national hero of Ecuador Antonio José de Sucre. After this rebellion Ecuador joined the great republic of Colombia, which also included Venezuela and Colombia. In 1830, Ecuador withdrew from the United States and became an independent state. The Ecuadorian regime knew many vicissitudes and rebellions, and was unstable.

Between 1904 and 1942 Ecuador lost territory in the course of battles with its neighbors. The border dispute between Ecuador and Peru over a significant part of the Andean jungle between them was resolved creatively by agreeing on a bi-national area where a nature reserve was established, which yielded considerable financial revenues to both countries.
Ecuador was the first country in Latin America to return to a democratic regime after a long period of instability as early as 1978, not long after Spain changed its regime.
